At present, more than 50 years after the first report of surfactant deficiency as the clinical cause of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS), surfactant therapy for this severe disease of newborn babies is one of the best validated standard therapeutic options in neonatology.

By also taking into account the situation in the low- and middle-income developing countries, this book gives a condensed overview of neonatal respiratory mortality and morbidity, perinatal morphological, functional and biochemical development of the lung, and provides insights into the use of surfactants in a wide range of actual concepts for the prevention and treatment of NRDS, as well as in further primarily rational indications involving neonatal respiratory disorders and the rather rare inherited disorders of surfactant metabolism.
